HEIC vs. JPG: Which Format Should You Actually Use?

HEIC and JPG both exist to do the same basic job — store a photo in a reasonably small file — but they go about it differently, and that difference matters depending on what you're doing with the photo. Here's an honest, practical comparison, not a spec sheet.

File size

This is HEIC's clearest win. At a comparable visual quality, a HEIC file is typically 40–50% smaller than the equivalent JPG. If you're storing thousands of photos on a phone with limited storage, that difference is significant — it's a large part of why Apple made HEIC the default in the first place.

Image quality

At the same file size, HEIC generally produces a sharper, cleaner image than JPG, because its underlying compression technology is newer and more efficient. In side-by-side comparisons at high quality settings, most people can't tell the two apart by eye — the difference shows up more in how small you can shrink the file before quality starts to visibly degrade.

Compatibility

This is where JPG wins decisively. JPG has been the default photo format across cameras, phones, websites, and software for over two decades, so there is essentially no device, browser, or application anywhere that doesn't support it. HEIC support has improved a lot — recent Windows and macOS versions handle it natively — but plenty of older software, some Android phones, and various web forms still don't recognize it.

Editing support

Most photo and video editing software has strong JPG support built in from day one. HEIC support in editing tools is newer and, in some cases, requires an additional plugin or codec. If you're a photographer or editor who regularly works across multiple tools, JPG (or a lossless format like PNG or TIFF) tends to cause fewer headaches.

Special features

HEIC has a few tricks JPG doesn't: it can store multiple images in a single file (which is part of how Live Photos work), supports a wider range of colors for HDR content, and can hold transparency. JPG is comparatively simple and doesn't support any of this.

So which should you use?

In practice, this isn't really an either/or decision — it's about matching the format to the moment. Let your iPhone keep saving photos as HEIC to save storage space, and convert to JPG specifically when you're sending a photo somewhere that needs it: a website, a work application, a Windows PC, an older piece of software. You get the storage benefit of HEIC day-to-day, without running into compatibility walls when it matters.

A real-world example

Say you take 50 photos at a birthday party on your iPhone. Left as HEIC, that library might take up around 100MB total. If you convert all 50 to JPG at high quality, expect somewhere closer to 180–200MB for the same photos — noticeably more, for a visual difference most people won't spot unless they're pixel-peeping side by side. But if you only need to email three of those photos to a relative on a Windows PC who can't open HEIC, converting just those three costs you almost nothing in storage while solving the actual problem. That's the pattern worth internalizing: convert selectively, not wholesale.

What about PNG?

PNG isn't really a competitor to either HEIC or JPG — it serves a different purpose. Where HEIC and JPG both use lossy compression to keep files small, PNG is lossless, which makes it the better choice specifically when you're editing a photo further or need an exact archival copy. What about storage costs over time?

It's worth thinking about HEIC vs. JPG not just as a one-time choice but as something that compounds. If you shoot thousands of photos a year, the storage saved by HEIC adds up across your entire library — fewer iCloud storage upgrades, more room on the device itself, faster backups. JPG's larger footprint is a bigger deal the more photos you take, which is one reason it makes sense to leave your camera on HEIC by default and only convert the specific photos that need to travel somewhere else.

Common mistakes people make

A few patterns come up often enough that they're worth flagging directly:

  • Converting an entire photo library to JPG "just in case." This throws away the storage benefit of HEIC for photos that may never need to leave your phone. Convert individual photos as you need them instead.
  • Assuming HEIC is "worse" because it's less compatible. Compatibility and technical quality are two different axes — HEIC is arguably the more advanced format; it just hasn't been adopted everywhere yet.
  • Not checking whether the destination actually needs JPG. Many modern apps and websites handle HEIC just fine now. It's worth testing before assuming a conversion is necessary.
